Virgil Halbert Christal

Virgil Halbert Christal, age 85, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 1:14 pm Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.  

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Pastor Jack Emmite will officiate.  Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park. 

Visitation celebrating Virgil's life will be held 1:00pm Wednesday until the time of the service at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. 

Virgil was born on July 16, 1937, in Hannibal, Missouri the son of James and Irene Christal.

He was united in marriage to Joanne Campbell on August 24, 1957, in Hannibal, MO. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2018. 

Survivors include his children; Marsha Morrison (Daniel) of Hannibal, MO, Richard Christal (Jimini), of Hannibal, MO, Lawrence Christal (Josie) of Hannibal, MO, Virgil Christal, Jr. (Amy) of Hannibal, MO, Jimmy Christal (Dawn) of New London, MO and Otto Christal of Hannibal, MO, sister; Brenda Beuter of Texas, numerous grandchildren and several great grandchildren.  Also surviving is a special nephew; Fred Gamble and a special niece, Missy Quinlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Teressa Waters; grandson, Caleb Christal; two sisters, Carolyn Cason and Janice Quinlin and brother, Herbert Christal.

Professionally Virgil worked for the shoe factory in Hannibal.  He was a member of the Emergency Squad.  Virgil was known to be a little onery but enjoyed helping people and was quite the family man.  He could be very comical at times. He loved being outside fishing, going to family outings and bbq's where he showed off his horseshoe skills along with listening to country music.  Many hours were spent watching his favorite shows, which included westerns, Hogan Hero's, Bonanza and Gunsmoke. As much as Virgil loved his dogs, Jake and Monkey, he loved his family even more.

Virgil was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. 

Pallbearers will be Virgil Christal Jr., Daniel Morrison, James Christal, Travis Christal, Nicholas Christal, Jacob Christal and Randy Sims
