Marvis "Marti" Tooey Obituary

 

"Marti" Marvis Jane Tooey, age 70, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 9:47 am Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at her home.  

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, June 19, 2020, at Hydesburg United Methodist Church.  Pastor Tom Lemons will officiate. 

A visitation celebrating Marti's life will be held 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Saturday, June 20, 2020, at the Browning United Methodist Church in Browning, MO.  

Graveside services and burial will follow the visitation Saturday in the Locust Valley Cemetery in rural Browning.

The family is being served by the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel of Hannibal.

Marti was born on October 24, 1949, in Trenton, MO the daughter of Marvin and Icel (Knifong) Rinehart.

She was united in marriage to Billy Joe Tooey on July 1, 1972, in Browning, MO.  He survives her of the home. 

Other survivors include her children Janna Tooey of Hannibal, MO and Joseph Tooey (Brandy) of Durham, MO; sister, Vanessa Cox (Joe Harris) of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Ryan Fellhoelter of Hannibal, MO, Joshua, Kathryn, and James Tooey of Durham, MO; special friend, Janice Stanford of Taylor Springs, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tooey was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmie LaRoy Rinehart and sister Susan Carol Peeler. 

Marti graduated from Meadville High School in 1967, and went on to further her education at Northeast Missouri State College (Truman State University) in Kirksville, MO.

Mrs. Tooey taught music and band at Madison, Philadelphia and Shelbina school districts, before settling in the Hannibal Public Schools where she taught at Eugene Field, Stowell and retired from the Hannibal Middle School as the vocal music teacher.
 
Marti was a talented musician that loved to teach the joy of music.  In recent years she sang alto in the Mark Twain Chorale and played piano for the Glee Club, along with playing for several weddings and funerals over the years.

Marti loved her family and cherished spending time with her grandchildren, especially going on shopping trips with them and the holidays, birthdays, and special moments in life spent together.  She also enjoyed going to coffee with her friends and fellowship with her Y Ladies Club.  Marti was a member of the Missouri Music Educators Association, SAI Fraternity, Evening Etude, and past member of the Hannibal Concert Association.

Mrs. Tooey was a member of Hydesburg United Methodist Church and was very instrumental in their choir along with being the Choir Director at the First United Methodist Church in Hannibal for several years.
