John Murphy Obituary

John W. "Doc" Murphy, age 76, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 7:18 am Saturday, February 11, 2023, at his home.  

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Fr. Alex Gabriel will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park with full military honors provided by Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post #55. 

Visitation celebrating John's life will be held 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Tuesday February 14, 2023, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. 

John was born on May 2, 1946, in Hannibal, MO the son of Edwin and Mary (Loague) Murphy.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Williams on June 24, 1972, in Hannibal. 

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Murphy of the home; two sons, Brian Murphy (Sarah) of Hannibal, MO and Jimmy Lamberson of Hannibal, MO; four brothers, Joseph Murphy (Beverly) of Palmyra, MO, David Murphy (Susie) of Hannibal, MO, Danny Murphy of Hannibal, MO and Donnie Murphy (Kathy) of Hannibal, MO; sister, Kate Emerson (Dale) of Springfield, IL.  Also surviving are four grandchildren, Sadie Reynolds, Ashton Kraft, Karli Gibbons and Paityn Murphy and four great-grandchildren, Colten Klompien, Kourtlyn Muehring, Nellie Kraft and Genevieve Bell; favorite sisters-in-law, Judy and Carol Williams and numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John W. "Billy" Murphy, Jr; daughter, Stephanie Ann Smith; brother, James Murphy and sister-in-law, Debbie Murphy.

Doc graduated from Hannibal High School in 1965 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Professionally John worked for American Cyanamid in maintenance as a machinist.

John was often found outside tending to the chickens he enjoyed raising, doing yard work or hunting and fishing.  He spent hours in the garage perfecting his woodworking skills.  Doc relaxed by reading and watching the St. Louis Cardinals or westerns, with John Wayne his favorite. Good conversation and coffee times with his neighbors was a favorite past time.  Spending time with his family especially his grandchildren brought great joy to John.

John was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. 

Pallbearers will be Jeff Narramore, Michael Conrad, Andrew McCourt, Myron Couch, Donnie Murphy and Danny Murphy.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Skip Quirk, Brian Yeater, Brent Murphy, William Crenshaw and Ron Darr

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northeast Missouri Humane Society or Cuddle Cat Rescue, in care of Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
