William "Bill" A. Henderson

William A. (Bill) Henderson, 91, of Hannibal, MO, passed away at 8:57 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Beth Haven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal, Father Mike Quinn officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by Emmette J. Shields Post 55, The American Legion at the funeral home. Burial will be at Stoutsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Mr. Henderson was born July 25, 1923 in Davenport, IA to Arch L. and Gladys M. Martz Henderson. He was married June 13, 1961 in Hannibal to Kathryn Ann Osborne. She preceded him in death, August 31, 1993. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Lynn Henderson of Quincy, IL and nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his wife, parents, step-daughter, Christina Williams and brother, James C. Henderson. Mr. Henderson retired as sales manager and Vice President from the Surpless-Dunn & Co. of Chicago, IL. A certified Senior Tooling Engineer he worked for forty years in the metal working industry. He started his career in the Wendt-Sonis Firm in Hannibal. Mr. Henderson served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during W.W. II. He participated in 31 combat missions over occupied Europe with the 385th Bomb Group with the 3rd Division. He was a member of the H.H.S. class of 1941, completed two years at Hannibal-LaGrange College and attended the University of Missouri at Rolla and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a member of Emmette J. Shields Post 55, The American Legion. An avid golfer, Bill made his home in Florida in the winter months. He was a member of several Senior Golf Associations. Living on a golf course he enjoyed playing several times a week. Bill was a member of St. John's Lodge #28, AF & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of St. Louis, NEMO Shrine Club and Moolah Temple of St. Louis and life member of B.O.P. Elks Lodge, 1198. Pallbearers will be J.R. Latta. O.C. Latta, Joe Hundold, Rich Henderson, Laura Kay Kennedy, and Dean Doyle. In his memory memorials may be made to Red Cloud Indian School, 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, SD 57770 in care of Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
