Sara Jane (Bragg) Downing, age 84, of Hannibal, Missouri, passed away peacefully at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Caring Hearts & Hands of Columbia.
A memorial service celebrating Sara's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal. Joe Banderman will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Providence Cemetery.
Visitation celebrating Sara's life will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
Sara was born on January 3, 1942, the daughter of Irvin True and Beulah May (Beeler) Bragg.
She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Richard Wayne Downing, on June 12, 1960. Together they shared nearly sixty-two years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 4, 2022.
Sara is lovingly remembered by her children, Michael (Sue) Downing, Steven (Lisa) Downing, and Amy (Kurtis) Sanders; ten grandchildren, Amber (Allen) Cooley, Joshua (Debbie) Downing, Charlotte (Bobby) Morrell, Caleb (Katie) Downing, Josh (Shira) Foster, Jacob (Kellie) Foster, Zachary (Bridgette) Downing, Morgan Downing (Brian Caldwell), Evan Sanders, and Meghan Sanders; nineteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerald (Mary) Bragg; one sister, Sandy Gibson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Sara was preceded in death by her parents-in-law, Dwight and Beulah Downing; her brothers, James Bragg and Joe Bragg; her infant brother, Gary Bragg; and her brother-in-law, Russell Gibson.
Sara devoted herself to being a homemaker until her youngest child left for college. She then began a career at Walmart, where she faithfully worked for fifteen years. Although she enjoyed her time there, her greatest joy was always found in her home, her family, and her church.
Sara accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and her faith remained the foundation of her life. She especially cherished the promises found in Acts 17:28 and 1 John 4:4, verses that continually encouraged and strengthened her. She enjoyed reading Christian fiction, playing games with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and creating treasured memories during holiday gatherings at her home. Those family celebrations were among the moments she cherished most.
Sara was a faithful member of Grace Covenant Baptist Church for many years, serving and worshiping as long as her health permitted.
Following Richard's passing, she attended Calvary Baptist Church with her daughter, Amy, and son-in-law, Kurtis.
Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Downing, Josh Foster, Evan Sanders, Jacob Foster, Zachary Downing, and Caleb Downing.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Covenant Baptist Church, Providence Cemetery or Caring Hearts & Hands of Columbia, in care of Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
