Ruth Mahala Petrie Barrett, 101, of Hannibal, MO, passed away at 1:45 AM Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Beth Haven Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, October 10, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Pastor Linda Spaun and Danny Griffen will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park.
Visitation will be 10:00 to 11:00 AM Friday at Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.
Ruth was born January 11, 1913, in Hannibal, MO the daughter of Samuel L. and Sophia M. (Dickhut) Petrie.
Mrs. Barrett graduated from Hannibal High School in the class of 1931. She married Warren Barrett on July 3, 1941 in Hannibal, MO. He preceded her in death on October 25, 1989.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Barrett and wife Ruth of Quincy, IL and F. Warren Barrett and wife Mary Ann of Hannibal, MO; seven grandchildren, Amy Barrett, Shannon Barrett, Sara Barrett, Adam Jones, Christine Poage, Heath Barrett and Stephen Barrett; eleven great-grandchildren; a dear niece, Jean Vincent of Hannibal, MO and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by two brothers, Harland and Harry Petrie; and four sisters, Helen Watson, Grace Chambers, Myra Petrie and Mildred Griffen.
Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hannibal. She was very active in volunteering for the American Cancer Society and in Christian activities. Ruth loved being a homemaker, raising her children, sewing, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. Ruth would often go to local nursing homes and visit with people and help them with their needs.
Pallbearers will be Dirk Sauer, Shannon Barrett, Stephen Barrett, Heath Barrett, Aaron Poage and Rich Griffen.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Promise Foundation, in care of Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.
