Richard (Dick) Noel Thompson, 80, of Hannibal, Mo. was called home to Heaven peacefully at 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2017, at his home surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 10, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Pastor David Scott will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Richard (Dick) was born on April 6, 1936, in Kinderhook, Ill. the son of Arch and Geneva Turner Thompson. He first married Shirley Sorrell. He later married Mary Tarleton Harbourn on March 12, 1983. Survivors include his wife Mary; children, Brenda Haun (Del) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Mark Thompson (Mary) of Jefferson City, Mo., Karen Lawzano (Michael) of New London, Mo., and Charles Thomas Harbourn, Jr. (Angie) of Quincy, Ill.; a sister, Beverly Bareis (John) of Saverton, Mo.; eleven grandchildren, Branson Haun (Jessica) of Arlington, Tx., Shannon Waldrop (Garrett) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Danielle Alves (Paul) of Winder, Ga., Shawn Thompson of Jamestown, Mo., Faren White (Clarence) of Jefferson City, Mo., and Miranda White (Edward) of Jefferson City, Mo., Justin Lawzano (Crystal) of Ashland, Mo., Ryan Lawzano (Jenny) of Columbia, Mo., Lindsey Caldwell (Frederick) of New London, Mo., Maegan O'Brien of Barry, Ill., and Tyler Harbourn of Beardstown, Ill.; sixteen very special great grandchildren whom he adored and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law, Margaret Tarleton, his older sister Betty Deege, and brother-in-law John Deege. Richard (Dick) graduated from West Pike High School in 1954. He attended Hannibal LaGrange College and earned an Associates Degree. He then transferred to the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy in Rolla, Mo., and earned a B.A. in Civil Engineering. Richard worked with the Missouri Department of Transportation while attending college and upon graduation he continued for thirty five years in District 3 located in Hannibal, Mo. He had many opportunities' to transfer from District 3, but his love of Hannibal and the Mississippi River kept him here. Richard enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as his love for duck hunting, fishing, boating, and camping at their river camp. He was an avid golfer and taught all of his grandchildren to enjoy the game. Dick also enjoyed traveling with his wonderful family, but most of all, he thoroughly enjoyed any activities that involved his family. Mr. Thompson was a member of Arch United Methodist Church. A special thank you to Dr. Meidl, Dr. Hirner, Dr. Bari, Hannibal Regional Hospital, Home Healthcare and Community Loving Care Hospice. Pallbearers will be Branson Haun, Shawn Thompson, Ryan Lawzano, Tyler Harbourn, Frederick Caldwell, and Paul Alves. Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Lawzano, Garrett Waldrop, Clarence Brown, and John Long. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arch United Methodist Church, in care of the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
