John Mccollum Hayes

Rev. Dr. John McCollum Hayes Jr. of Hannibal, Missouri died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at his home. A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15, 2017, at Saverton-Ilasco United Methodist Church, five miles south of Hannibal on Highway 79. Pastor Rich Stilley will officiate. The family is being served by the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel, in Hannibal. John was born April 17, 1939 to John and Kathryn Hayes in Cambridge, Ohio. He graduated from Cambridge High School, Mount Union College, and Candler School of Theology at Emory University and received his Doctorate of Ministry from Drew University. On June 30, 1963, John married the love of his life, Atril Juelfs. They raised their family and shared many adventures together during their 54 years of marriage. John was privileged to serve churches in Ohio, Georgia, California, and Missouri. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved gardening and reading. He will be remembered for his love of singing, his humor, and being a silly grandpa. Along with his wife, Atril, John is survived by their three children: John (Sandy) Hayes III, Sally (Randy) Hoelscher, and Kyra (Bill) Moore, grandchildren: Melissa (Kevin) Baum, Alexandra (Josh) Dalton, John McCollum Hayes IV, Sean Hoelscher, Leah Hoelscher, Tristan Hayes, and Cameron Hayes, great-grandchildren: Emma, Eleanor, and Lucy Baum and Grayson Dalton, brother, Charles (Helen) Hayes, and sister, JoEllen (Don) Shimek. John was preceded in death by his parents, stepfathers Jasper Starr and Paul Denius, sister Margaret Kathryn Hayes, and brother Bernard Hayes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Saverton-Ilasco United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice, in care of the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
