G.H. "Sam" Lomax

December 24, 1919 — January 16, 2016

G.H. "Sam" Lomax, 96, of Hannibal, Mo. went to be with his Lord at 8:42 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2016, at his home. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Rev. Joe Thrower will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park. Visitation in honor of Mr. Lomax will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January, 19, 2016, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Mr. Lomax was born on December 24, 1919, in Pike County, Ill. the son of John and Pearl McDaniel Lomax. He married Ruth Ella Potterfield on June 30, 1946, in Hannibal, Mo. She preceded him in death on July 17, 2010. Survivors include one son, Charles Dennis Harrison and wife Jane, one daughter, Judy Harding all of Hannibal, Mo., eight grandchildren, Sherri Harrison, Butch Harrison, Paula Brown (Ryan), Ronnie Moore (Patty), Vickie O'Dell, Michael Erwin (Tammy), Brenda Wessels (Kelly) and Brian Whaley (Stephanie), twenty great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Lomax was preceded in death by two daughters, Linda Lomax and Patricia Walker, two brothers, Gareld and John Lomax and two sisters, Jewel Keach and Regina Chatfield. Sam was the founder of Lomax Trucking that he owned and operated until his retirement in 1979. He was a charter member of the Missouri Dump Truckers Association and a past member of the Moose Lodge in Hannibal. Sam and his wife Ruth enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, where you would find Mr. Lomax playing around of golf or enjoying the beautiful scenery. He also enjoyed tinkering around his house, fishing on the farm pond and taking care of his farm. Mr. Lomax was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Butch Harrison, Ryan Brown, Ronnie Moore, Brian Whaley, Lyle Cox and Larry Sparks. Memorial contribution may be made to Prince Avenue Baptist Church, American Diabetes Association or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation care of the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
