George R. Burroughs

George R. Burroughs, 92, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 5:16 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Hannibal Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Rev. Harold Maple will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park. Visitation will be held 12:00 until the time of the service Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. George was born January 10, 1923, in Frankford, MO the son of Charley and Sadie (Montgomery) Burroughs. Mr. Burroughs was married to Catherine "Lucille" Dryden for over 72 years they were united in marriage on March 18, 1942, in Hannibal, MO by the Rev. John Golden. She survives him. Other survivors include one son, Gary R. Burroughs and wife Mikel Sue of Kansas City, MO; one daughter, Marilyn Summers of Center, MO; four grandchildren, Chris Burroughs (Rebecca) of Liberty, MO, Craig Burroughs (Sara) of St. Louis, MO, Jennifer Madore (Bill) of Hannibal, MO and Julie Fox (Jason) of Kansas City, MO; ten great grandchildren, Briley, Dylan, Jenna, Hannah Addison and Carson Burroughs, Madison and Adrian Madore, Jacob and Mikayla Fox; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Burroughs was preceded in death by one brother, Estel Burroughs; two sisters, Ann Pennington and Twila Mook; and one son-in-law, Ted L. Summers. George worked for 37 ½ years at Continental Cement Company before retiring on March 25, 1986. Mr. Burroughs enjoyed working, gardening, mowing grass, mushroom hunting and doing carpentry work. He was especially know for helping out friends and family with their home repairs or helping them mow their grass. Mr. Burroughs attended church at Westside Christian Church. George was a member of the Ilasco Historical Preservation Society. Pallbearers will be Chris Burroughs, Craig Burroughs, Jason Fox, Bill Madore, Don Burroughs and Gene Dryden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard Ellison, Tom Stewart, John Yargus, Norman Tate, Brady Borrowman, Bill Nemes, Robert Drennan, Bill Heibel, Quintin Dryden, and Travis Dryden. Memorial contribution may be made to the Ilasco Historical Preservation Society, in care of Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.
