Estel E. (Doc) Burroughs, 90, of Hannibal, died Wed., March 7, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel, Pastor Wes Tischer, officiating. Burial will be in Grand View Burial Park with full military honors conducted by Emmette J. Shields Post 55, of the American Legion. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thurs. at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Mr. Burroughs was born June 16, 1921, in Pike County, Mo. to Charley E. and Sadie Montgomery Burroughs. He married Mildred S. Christ Burroughs, Jan. 13, 1946, in Hannibal and she preceded him in death, Dec. 12, 2006. Survivors include one son, Donald (Debbie) Burroughs of Hannibal; seven grandchildren, Josh Lund, Jordan Lund, Kelly (Jason) Stark, Andrea Burroughs, Nathan (Annabelle) Wilt, Adam (Rebekah) Wilt and Luke (Stephanie) Wilt; thirteen great-grandchildren, one brother, George (Lucille) Burroughs of Hannibal, son-in-law, Junior (Kathy) Lund of Bethel; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Sue Lund, two sisters, Anna Pennington and Twila Mook. Estel retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after 25 years of service with the maintenance of ways department. Following his retirement he worked at Swag Man Antiques in Hannibal. He accepted Jesus in his life on Oct. 10, 1942. He loved spending time with his family and was a avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Estel was a veteran of W.W. II. He served with the 435th Army Air Forces Division. He was sent overseas on Oct. 21, 1943. Sgt. Burroughs received seven bronze stars for participation in battles and campaigns in Southern France, Normandy, Rome-Arno, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
