E. W. (Comp) Compton, 96, of Hannibal, died at 5:55 a.m., Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Luther Manor. Memorial Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Jerry Waters and Jay Waters will officiate. Visitation will be on Saturday, Jan. 21, from Noon until 1:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Burial was in Grand View Burial Park. Elsie Willard Compton was born June 11, 1915, at Kincaid, Ill., to Jesse David and Essie Caroline Collins Compton. He married Geneva Berneice Rule Compton, June 11, 1939, at Nilwood, Ill., and she preceded him in death Dec. 14, 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Pat (Jerry) Waters of Yantis, Tex.; 4 grandchildren, Jay (Darla) Waters of Midlothian, Tex., Sharon Shiver, of Highland Village, Tex., Tim (Abby) Compton of Palmyra and Angela (Larry) Logston of Kirksville. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and a brother, Leon Compton of Cottonwood, Calf. Mr. Compton was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Larry W. Compton, 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Comp came to Hannibal in 1939, to manage the Singer Sewing Machine Store. In 1947 he opened his own business known as Compton Appliance Company at 215 N. Main Street. He was joined by his son Larry W. Compton in the business and the store operated until the late 70âa
