Charles L. Parker

Charles L. Parker, 85, of Hannibal, Mo. passed away at 11:50 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2017, at Willow Care Center in Hannibal. Funeral services in honor of Mr. Parker will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hannibal. The Rev. Dr. Andrew Peter Martinez will officiate. Full military honors provided by the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post #55 will be held at the church following the service. A family burial will be held in Shelby Memorial Cemetery in Shelbyville, Mo. Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. The family is being served by the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal. Charles was born of April 20, 1931, in Shelbyville, Mo. the son of Roy Verl and Zena (Bunney) Parker. Mr. Parker graduated from Shelbina High School and went on to further his education at the University of Missouri until he was drafted into the Army on February 27, 1952. Charles honorably served his country during the Korean War. After his Honorable discharge, Charles went to work for MODOT and proudly worked for 42 years before retirement. After retirement Charles worked at the Hannibal Visitors Bureau where he enjoyed talking to people, giving directions, and sharing his love of maps. Charles was first married to Mary Agnus Holderieath on April 3, 1954. She preceded him in death on March 30, 1987. He later married May Ann Awalt Johnson on August 5, 1989 in Hannibal, Mo. at the First Presbyterian Church. She survives him. Other survivors include two sons, John G. Parker of Oklahoma City, Ok., and David Johnson (Lisa) of Slydell, La., three daughters, Charlotte Marie Findlay (Paul E.) of Perryville, Mo., Janet Sue Gibson of Mustang, Ok., and Julie Cox (Tim E.) of Woodridge, Ill., seven grandchildren, Christina Marie Elliott (Jason), Paul Fredrick Findlay, Rodney Gibson, Charles Gibson, Jeff Gibson (Candice), Alan Cox and Courtney Cox., four great grandchildren, Alissa, Seth, Breanna, Brett, and Shyann. In addition to his parents and first wife Mary Agnus, Mr. Parker was preceded in death by five brothers. Charles and Mary Ann were faithful members of the First Presbyterian Church in Hannibal where he had served as an Elder and several other capacities through the church. Charles also was a member of the Hannibal Evening Kiwanis. Charles and Mary Ann enjoyed their retirement by traveling across the United States in a RV. Charles enjoyed going to Arizona, but his favorite place to travel was to Texas to see his grandchildren. When not on the road traveling, Charles could be found sitting in his chair studying all types of geographical maps. In his younger years, Charles enjoyed playing softball & volleyball. As he became older, that love of sports turned him into an avid Cardinals and Mizzou fan. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, in care of the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
