Charles Richard Altheide

Charles Richard "Dick" Altheide, 80, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 11:05 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015, at Hannibal Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hannibal. Rev Michael Stoerger, Rev. Jeremy Klaustermeier and Rev. Richard Ingmire will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park. Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel. Charles was born October 5, 1934, in Hannibal, MO, the son of William Lucas "Luke" and Carrie (Schanbacher) Altheide. Mr. Alheide married Anita Craylon Lane on November 17, 1957, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hannibal. She preceded him in death on February 25, 2013. Survivors include three sons, Richard W. Altheide (Cheryl Taylor) of Rolla, MO, Robert W. Altheide of Alabaster, AL, and Craig A. Altheide (Frannie) of Hannibal, MO; six grandchildren, Samantha, Martha, Paul, Joshua, Catherine and Hallie Altheide; three step-grandchildren, Jared and Fred Taylor and Hayden Duncan; and one niece, Mary Ruth Altheide. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Altheide was preceded in death by two brothers, James "Jim" Robert and William "Bill" Lucas Altheide; and one sister-in-law, Rosemary Altheide. Dick graduated from Hannibal High School in 1952, and received his BS Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1956, from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (Missouri University of Science and Technology) Rolla, MO. Mr. Altheide started his career in 1956, as an engineering trainee at the Hannibal Plant, Universal Atlas Division of the United States Steel Corporation. In 1996, he retired as Vice President of Operations of Continental Cement Company. He was instrumental in establishing a hazardous waste fuels usage program for the Hannibal plant. Dick was a member of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Mining Industry Council, CKRC (Cement Kiln Recycling Coalition) and ASTM-C150. While at the University he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Blue Key, Sigma Phi Epsilon, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Chi Sigma. After his retirement he was elected to the Academy of Chemical Engineers and Order of the Golden Shillelagh by the University. Mr. Altheide was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he had served on the School Board, Sunday School Superintendent and taught in the Sunday School. He was also a lifetime member of the Ilasco Area Historical Preservation Society. Dick enjoyed working in his garden and taking care of his cats, Bummer, Inky, Fluff, Pepe de Peu, Frick, Frack, Snowy and Woody. Pallbearers will be Louis Riggs, Danny Riggs, Fay Bagby, Lynn Anderson, Jeff Noel and Bob Drennan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ilasco Area Historical Preservation Society, NEMO Humane Society or St. John's Lutheran Church, in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.
