Benny R. (Ben) Swan

Benny R. (Ben) Swan, 87, of Hannibal, died at 8:55 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Hannibal Regional Hospital. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tues., March 20, 2012, at Grand View Burial Park, Pastor David Scott officiating. There will be no visitation. Smith Funeral Home & Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Swan was born Oct. 25, 1924 in Hannibal to Earl and Florence Rice Swan. He married Ina P. Ogle on Sept. 24, 1949, in New London, Mo. and she survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Linda (Gary) Schroer of Jefferson City, Mo.; one granddaughter, Whitney Schroer of Springfield, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Charles (Virginia) Ogle of Center, Mo.; three nephews, Ron (Marsha) Dugan of Bowling Green, Mo., Adam (Amy) Ogle of Center, Mo. and Mike Ogle of San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Katherine Dugan. Ben retired as a clerk at the Hannibal Post Office after 30 years of service. He graduated from Rensselaer High School and attended Hannibal LaGrange College and the University of Missouri at Columbia. He served as a Lieutenant with the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a pilot from the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Midway. Ben was a member of Arch United Methodist Church and had served on the church board. He was a member of Emmette J. Shields Post 55, The American Legion and Hannibal Lodge No. 188, AF & AM. Pallbearers will be Bill Northcutt, R.V. (Skip) Wells, Jr., Bob Wilson, Joe Farrell, Francis Wells and Walter Baker. Memorials may be made to Arch United Methodist Church or the James E. Cary Cancer Center.
