Martha J. Swearingen, 90, of Hannibal, MO passed away at 9:29 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Beth Haven Nursing Home, in Hannibal.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Pastor Bob Seaman will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park.
Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
Martha was born on November 15, 1926, in Hannibal, MO the daughter of Cornelius Earl and Francis J. (Ober) Cousins.
She was united in marriage to Darell W. Swearingen on February 2, 1947, in Hannibal at the Park Methodist Church. Darell preceded her in death on July 13, 1995.
Survivors include two children, Phillip W. Swearingen (Janet) of Delmont, PA, and Jennifer Vance (Phil) of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren, Greg Swearingen (Hala) of Utah, Stephanie Maxson (Andy) of Ohio, Ryan Vance (Ashley) of Washington, Rebecca Pape (Bryan) of Washington, and Sarah Vance of Washington; six great grandchildren and many wonderful friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Swearingen was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Professionally Martha had worked as a Service Representative for Southwestern Bell in Hannibal for many years before retiring in 1986.
Upon retirement, Martha enjoyed volunteering at the Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary, Telephone Pioneers and watching the Cardinals.
Martha was a faithful member of Park United Methodist Church for forty-nine years. She was active in the Worship Committee and enjoyed baking for church functions. Mrs. Swearingen was very social and will be missed by all who knew her.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Swearingen's grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Park United Methodist Church, James E. Cary Cancer Center or Hannibal Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
