Malcolm Gentry Obituary

Malcolm Henry Gentry, 89, of Hannibal, MO was born to eternal life at 2:59 pm, Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Beth Haven Nursing Home.

Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the First Christian Church in Hannibal. The Reverend Steve Barker will officiate. Graveside services and burial will be in the Grand View Burial Park.

Malcolm Henry Gentry was born to life September 7, 1928, in Hannibal, Missouri to Malcolm Stephen & Josephine Turner Gentry. He was married to Eva Dale Davis on July 17, 1949, in Pike County Missouri. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2017.

Survivors include five children, Malcolm John Gentry and wife Suzanne Peer Gentry, of Hannibal, MO; Dr. Deborah Gentry Loman and husband Dr. Leo Anthony Loman of Kirkwood, MO; Jerome "Jerry" Henry Gentry of Hannibal, MO; Jeffrey Earl Gentry and wife Teresa Hendricks Gentry of Hannibal, MO; and Susan Gentry Ledbetter and husband Timothy Wayne Ledbetter of Hannibal, MO.

Ten Grandchildren, Jamil Loman (Brenda) of Tucson, AZ; Marcus Loman (Katherine) of Ballwin, MO; Candace Thornwald (William) of Spokane, MO; Elizabeth Brunner (Gregory) of St. Peters, MO; John Steven Gentry of Center, MO; Nicholas Gentry (Hannah) of Hannibal, MO; Rebecca Colgin (Aaron) of Edmond, OK; Benjamin Gentry of Hannibal; Jacob Gentry of Las Vegas, NV; and Adam Ledbetter of Hannibal, MO. Two Step-Grandchildren Amanda Wiedeman (Ryan) of Brookfield, MO and Sandra Johnson (Aaron) of Linneus, MO.

Nine Great-Grandchildren, Mateo Loman of Tucson, AZ; Isaac, Max & Chase Loman of Ballwin, MO; Miriam, Cecilia, Leo & Felicity Brunner of St. Peters, MO; Lincoln Gentry of Hannibal, MO; and Alexandria LeMasters Gentry of Hannibal, MO. Five Step-Great Grandchildren, Clara, Kai & Kyle Wiedeman of Brookfield, MO, and Gabe & Sela Johnson of Linneus, MO.

In addition to his wife, Malcolm was preceded in death by his parents, son Joel Anthony Gentry, sister Mary Jo Youse & brother-in-law John Youse.

Malcolm Gentry lived all of his life just west of Hannibal. He graduated from Hannibal High School in 1946 and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO. He served on the Marion County School Board for six years & was a life-long member of First Christian Church of Hannibal, MO.

Malcolm was well known in the area as a successful farmer. He was the 5th generation to farm the land that was established in 1818, before Hannibal became a city and Missouri a state. The farm has been designated a Century Farm and continues with the 6th generation. Malcolm was President of the Hannibal High School Future Farmers of America in 1946 and was awarded the American Farmer Degree at Kansas City, MO in 1947. His earnings from his FFA (Future Farmers of America) projects was used to purchase 70 acres of farm ground, other than the family farm which started his career in farming. He was the first president of the National Farmers Organization in Marion County, MO. In addition to growing crops and running a hog & cattle operation, he operated a breeder herd for Ralston Purina Swine Enterprise for over 20 years and had been a Super Crost Seeds salesperson.

Even though farming was Malcolm's primary interest & livelihood, he enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and traveling with his wife & friends to numerous countries over the years.

Pallbearers will be Jamil Loman, Marcus Loman, John Steven Gentry, Nicholas Gentry, Gregory Brunner and Timothy Ledbetter.

Honorary pallbearers will be grand-daughters & great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Center, 4215 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63108, in care of the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
