Virgil W. “Jack” Harsell, Sr., 88, of Hannibal, died on Sunday , April 22, 2012, at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown, MO. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Rev. Carol Evans will officiate. Burial, with full Military Honors by Emmette J. Shields Post #55, American Legion, will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
“Jack” Harsell was born May 22, 1923, to Henry & Ida Gipson Harsell in Taylor. He married Virginia Piper on April 3, 1954, and she survives; along with five children: Jennie, Connie, Carol (Maynard) Evans, Jackie, and Virgil (Amy) Harsell, Jr.; four grandchildren Andrea, Silvia, Quaid and Victor; and two great grandchildren, Evon & Adien. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and three sisters.
Jack was a lifelong hard worker and was employed in farm work, Gardner Denver, Western Publishing, and retired from Swan & Gottman. He served in two tours with the Army Air Corps, in WWII; Signal Air Warning Battalion (Philippines & New Guinea.)
